This video explores architectural art through the vision of two art formations: Instabili Vaganti-Italy and Cross Borders-Spain, through a long-distance collaboration made during the first lockdown. Two different locations are animated by the performers’ actions, an house under construction on the outskirts of Madrid and the faithful reconstruction of the L’espirit nouveau pavilion in Bologna, built on the original drawings of one of the greatest architects of the last century, on the occasion of the Exposition International des Arts Décoratifs in Paris in 1925: Le Corbusier. Through the architectural harmonies of the Pavilion, as an expression of that art that combines functionality and beauty, the performers manage to bring to life the architect’s dreams, unrealized projects that are transformed into shapes, volumes and spaces incorporated within the performative action.

The video was created by the artistic duo Instabili Vaganti, with the collaboration of choreographer and performer Elena Copelli following an experimental narrative process realized by a remote collaboration, due to the pandemic, with the Cross Border Project collective and their director Lucía Miranda, who interviewed Spanish architect Luis Antonio Rodríguez. The piece interweaves real-life accounts with quotes from the work “The Global City” by Nicola Pianzola and from the text “Architecture is a Staircase” by architect Stefano Mavili.

Architecture is the first episode of the web series SIE7E, a project that aims to explore the various expressions of arts through the long-distance collaboration of Italian and Spanish artists. Its goal is to convey the redemptive and salvific power of art and its intrinsic cathartic function, highlighting its constant pursuit of beauty and its ability to create a poetic universe. Furthermore, the work reflects the difficult historical moment we all experienced during COVID-19, not only in contemporary theater and dance but also in society as a whole.
